“Three billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day. They lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines. The computer which controlled the machines; SKYNET” – Sarah Connor, Terminator 2.
Exciting quote right? In this episode we discuss the dark side or rather down side of Artificial Intelligence (AI). While the Terminator franchise is a fictional story, it can also be a warning. “SKYNET”, a summarized metaphor to describe the potential hazards of developing AI (to the point where it cannot be controlled).
Welcome to Nerdy by Nature! In this Science-y episode, you hear about looming dangers of SKYNET. A few episodes ago, we discussed the benefits of having Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how it could better humanity with everyday living; but, no one ever thinks about the dark side of the technology.
There have been a lot development so far with AI and robotics, and some applications have already proved to be ground breaking; however, setting out to develop AI that could match our own abilities;l (well, that’s just a Pandora’s Box). The prospect of AI becoming self aware, is both scary and exciting. In fact, it would be the ultimate creation.
Scientists and researchers always ask, how can we do this? How can we make it happen? but no one never asks if we should, or how machine learning tech will evolve. AI, which is self-aware, is essentially living (a sentient being of sorts). Once that occurs, there will be moral and ethical complications.
Imagine having daily interactions with AI. Either in an autonomous vehicle. Perhaps your personal “chef” made dinner as you were running late, or put the kids to bed when you were at the show. Those all sounds like fantastic scenarios. What if AI was completely in charge of making decisions rather than taking orders; and, what if it felt it knew more about what to do than you did?
Could you completely trust AI?
Maybe AI might not cause an apocalyptic event, but there are concerns that having useful AI could take millions of jobs away from people (which could prove to be catastrophic economically). I’m not saying I’m paranoid, but I feel that there is some merit heeding the warnings from such high profile individuals like Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates.
